The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has named Ashesi student Kwame Brako Asante as the overall best candidate in Ghana’s 2021 West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Kwame, a former student of the Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (PRESEC) and a Computer Science major at Ashesi, was also awarded the second-best overall candidate across West Africa for the WASSCE’s International Excellence Awards.

The WASSCE is West Africa’s most widely taken high school examination, with over two million registered candidates in 2021. WAEC organises the International Excellence Awards to honour and celebrate outstanding student performance in the WASSCE Exam. Although he did not feature on stage at the National Science and Math Quiz Championship, Kwame also represented PRESEC-Legon as the third contestant in their Greater Accra Regional Championship win in 2021.

The awards for Kwame and other West African honourees – Nwesa Chinasa and Eleanor Godswill from Nigeria – were announced during the Annual Council meeting of WAEC in Abuja, Nigeria, with the Nigerian Vice President H.E Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and other dignitaries in attendance. Kwame’s award was presented to him in Ghana by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa.
