GCB Staff CSR: Employees Refurbish Mayera Faase Health Centre

Employees of GCB Bank PLC’s Operations Department have refurbished key sections of the Mayera Faase Health Centre in the Ga North Municipality, improving the condition of the facility and upgrading the washroom serving patients, including nursing mothers and newborns.

The intervention forms part of GCB Bank’s Staff Community Impact Programme (SCIP), an employee-led corporate social responsibility initiative through which more than 4,500 employees, organised in 95 teams, are implementing 95 community projects across Ghana. The programme addresses practical community needs and aims to positively impact up to one million Ghanaians through interventions in health, education, sanitation, environmental sustainability and other areas of community development.

The project was undertaken by Operations Department Group 3, following staff observations and consultations with management of the health centre. These engagements revealed significant maintenance challenges at the facility, which had reportedly not undergone major refurbishment for more than six years.

Among the key issues identified were deteriorating fascia boards that allowed rainwater to seep from the roof onto sections of the building, contributing to the gradual deterioration of both the interior and exterior walls. The maternity ward washroom was also in poor condition, affecting comfort and convenience for mothers, newborns and healthcare workers.

To address these challenges, the team carried out refurbishment works aimed at improving the facility’s appearance, functionality and overall environment. Special attention was given to the maternity ward washroom to enhance hygiene, safety and usability for patients and staff.

Speaking on the significance of SCIP, Cynthia Eyram Ofori-Dwumfwo, Chief Marketing, Communications and Customer Experience Officer of GCB Bank, said the programme empowers employees to respond directly to challenges facing communities and contribute to meaningful, practical solutions.

“SCIP reflects our commitment to creating positive impact through employee action. Across the country, our people are identifying community needs and working together to address them in ways that improve everyday lives. By supporting initiatives such as this, our employees help extend GCB Bank’s contribution to community wellbeing beyond our core banking services.”

For the Operations team, the project presented an opportunity to improve conditions at a healthcare facility that plays an important role in serving the local community. Dominic Cobbinah, Head of Operations and a member of the project team, said the team was particularly concerned about the state of the facility and its potential impact on both patients and healthcare workers.

“Healthcare facilities should provide a safe, clean and comfortable environment for care delivery. When we observed the condition of the health centre, particularly the areas serving mothers and newborns, we recognised an opportunity to make a practical difference. Our hope is that these improvements will contribute to a better experience for patients and support healthcare workers in delivering quality care.”

Receiving the refurbished facility on behalf of the health centre, Dr Ninette Hayibor, Chief Supervisor of Mayera Faase Health Centre, expressed appreciation to GCB Bank and the employee volunteers for the intervention. She noted that the improvements would contribute to a more comfortable and suitable environment for both patients and staff.

Beyond enhancing the appearance and usability of the facility, the refurbishment is expected to help address long-standing maintenance issues and support the continued delivery of healthcare services. The upgraded maternity ward washroom will also contribute to improved hygiene and comfort for mothers, newborns and caregivers.

The Mayera Faase Health Centre Project is the 26th of 95 SCIP projects being implemented by GCB Bank employees across Ghana, reflecting the Bank’s commitment to improving health outcomes and creating sustainable impact in communities nationwide.
