Famous Béninoise singer Angelique Kidjo has just won her fifth Grammy Award beating out competition from Ghana’s Rocky Dawuni, Nigeria’s Femi Kuti, Wizkid and Burna Boy and Hawaiian act Daniel Ho & Friends in the Best Global Music Album category at the 64th Grammy Awards.
Winning for her work on her ‘Mother Nature’ album, she thanked the Nigerian artistes who featured in the album — Burna Boy, Yemi Alade and Mr. Eazi during her acceptance speech. This makes it her 5th Grammy win, having won one in 2007 for her album “Djin Djin”, in 2014 for “Eve”, in 2015 for “Sings” and in 2020 for “Celia”, an album which pays tribute to the singer of Cuban music and salsa, Célia Cruz, who died in 2003.
For Ghanaians all over the world, expectations were high for Rocky Dawuni to win this award. A Ghanaian singer, songwriter and record producer, Rocky was the first Ghanaian to ever be nominated for a Grammy, achieving this in 2015 when his sixth studio album titled “Branches of The Same Tree” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in December 2015 for the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. Unfortunately, he lost.
His seventh studio album was nominated again but this time for Best Global Music Album award at the 2022 Grammys. He was in contention with his “Voice of BunBon, Vol. 1” album. And faced competition from Daniel Ho & Friends, Angelique Kidjo, Femi Kuti, and Wizkid and eventually lost to Angelique.
