Ghanaian podcast show, Sincerely Accra—produced by Kwame Asante Ofori and hosted by Joseph Nti, has been declared by Spotify as a recipient of its 2022 Africa Podcast Fund. The popular podcast focuses on urban life in Accra, Ghana’s capital. It hosts a variety of personalities and fascinating, diverse debates inspired by both the speakers’ viewpoints and popular culture.
Vox pops and in-studio interviews rotate on each episode, usually in English but occasionally with a mix of Pidgin, Twi, and Ga. The show has been running for five years.
“Our goal is to help African platform creators on a global scale and shift the historically restrictive view of stories about the continent,” said Spotify in an official statement.
Sincerely Accra podcast will receive its share of a $100,000 Spotify fund alongside twelve other selected podcasts from other African countries.
These include podcasts from Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Cameroon that have made up a chunk of Africa’s biggest podcast audience.
According to a joint statement from Mr. Ofori and Mr. Nti that was communicated to TheAfricanDream.net, they said that “in the words of the great Ghanaian songstress Efya, ‘Accra living no be easy!’ which translates from the Ghanaian Pidgin into English to mean, ‘life is not easy in Accra.”
“We started Sincerely Accra to tell the intriguing stories of Accra living, and it’s really amazing to us that what started out as Accra’s love letter to Ghanaians is now on track to becoming Accra’s love letter to the world,” said the duo to TheAfricanDream.net, recounting their startup story.
“Therefore, we owe a ton of gratitude to the Gold Coast Report (GCR) team, Spotify Africa, and most importantly, our sincerities; our unrelenting die-hard fans who have gone to the moon and back for us. The Sandwich Podcast, which is hosted by Joan, Kibz, Nyamita, and Owen, It is aired in a mix of English, Swahili, and Sheng.
The Messy Inbetween, which is hosted by Murugi Munyi and Lydia Mukami.
Mantalk.ke, which is hosted by Kenyan creators Eli Mwenda and Oscar Koome.
Nipe Story, which is hosted and narrated by Kenyan writer, journalist, and activist Kevin Mwachiro.
Cameroon
Si Maman M’avait Dit, which roughly translates to “if my mom had told me” is hosted in French by Diane Audrey Ngako, an entrepreneur, journalist, and art collector.
South Africa
After School is After School with Sis G.U., which is hosted by Gugulethu Nyatsumba.
The Journey Kwantu, which is hosted by Vusumzi Ngxande.
Wisdom & Wellness with Mpoomy Ledwaba is hosted by content creator Mpoomy Ledwaba.
Convos & Cocktails with Lesego Tlhabi is hosted by the prominent South African satirist Lesego Tlhabi, known for her role as Coconut Kelz.
Nigeria
I Said What I Said, which is hosted by Feyikemi Abudu, an entrepreneur, and by Jola Ayeye, a storyteller with an interest in contemporary African culture.
Tea With Tay, which is hosted by Nigerian content creator Taymesan.
F&S Uncensored, which is hosted by Feyikemi Akin-Bankole and Simi Badiru.
The fund, according to Spotify, was given to independent, upcoming podcasters with expanding audiences. Spotify is concentrating on promoting podcasts that have a variety of hosts, genders, voices, genres, languages, and materials.
“We’re excited about the development of podcasting in Africa, particularly because the medium allows underrepresented African voices to tell the story of Africa,” says Melissa Mbugua, Co-Director of Africa Podfest.
