Meet Dr. Nana Nhyira Boahene, a young and passionate eye doctor who is on a mission to prevent blindness and promote comprehensive eye care in Ghana. As a doctor at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Nhyira provides eye care services and advocates for eye health awareness to prevent avoidable blindness and other blinding conditions.
In addition to her work at the hospital, Dr. Nhyira is the founder and president of the See Right Project, a non-governmental organization that educates communities on the importance of eye health. Her efforts have contributed to numerous free eye screenings in hospitals, churches, and communities, including the Manhyia Palace.
Dr. Nhyira is also a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the World Council of Optometry, and is a candidate for fellowship at the American Academy of Optometry (AAO).
Her passion for eye care has brought her to various media outlets to discuss important eye health topics. She was a guest on UTV’s Adekye Nsroma on World Sight Day, where she spoke about the effects of hypertension on the eyes. She also went to OKAY 101.7 FM to discuss retinoblastoma.
Dr. Nhyira’s dedication to her work stems from her childhood dream of becoming a doctor. She attended Aburi Girls Senior High School and later became the first female chief of staff of the KNUST SRC during her university years.
At only 24 years old, Dr. Nhyira has accomplished so much, but she still believes her biggest win is yet to come. Her future aspirations include becoming a member of parliament for her hometown, Akyem Abekoase, and providing free hospital care for people in Ghana. She hopes to restore hope and faith in her community and become the change they need.
Dr. Nhyira’s work and dedication to eye health are a reminder that anyone can achieve their dreams and make a significant impact in their community.
