KNUST celebrates its lecturer Dr. Kwadwo Owusu Akuffo for winning prestigious award in UK

Dr. Kwadwo Owusu Akuffo, a Senior Lecturer and Head of Department, Optometry and Visual Science, has been given a prestigious award in the United Kingdom at the Brain and Ocular Nutrition (BON) Conference held in Downing College, Cambridge.

As part of the George Britton Early Investigator of the Year Award, Dr Akuffo received €2,000 (GHS 19,600) from a pharmaceutical company called MacuHealth which offers customers industry-leading eye care supplements.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where Dr Akuffo lectures under the College of Science, made an official publication on the school’s website, celebrating the Ghanaian academician for his remarkable feat.

The purpose of the George Britton Early Investigator of the Year Award is to recognise and honour the outstanding accomplishments and successes of early-career researchers.

Dr. Akuffo has published over 40 scientific peer-reviewed articles and contributed to several conference proceedings. He is an Associate Editor for Springer Nature’s BMC Ophthalmology journal and a reviewer for several ophthalmic journals.

He completed his Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree in 2011 at KNUST and obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in 2017 at the Nutrition Research Centre Ireland (www.nrci.ie), Waterford Institute of Technology, Waterford, Ireland. His research focuses on ophthalmic epidemiology and ocular nutrition.
